Book of 1 Chronicles - Chapter 21 - Verse 23

21:23
And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

Meaning

In this verse, Ornan, a Jebusite, is offering to give King David everything he needs for the burnt offerings and sacrifices he wishes to make. Ornan's generosity here is truly remarkable as he not only offers the oxen for the burnt offerings but also the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering. By giving these items to King David, Ornan is demonstrating his willingness to support and assist in the king's religious practices. This act of kindness and generosity shows Ornan's respect for King David and his desire to ensure that the king can fulfill his duties as a leader and as a worshipper of God. It is a reminder of the importance of supporting others in their faith and helping them carry out their religious obligations.

Theological Overview

Ornan's response to David's request to purchase his threshing floor for building an altar reflects a deep theological understanding of worship and sacrifice. By offering not only the oxen for burnt offerings, but also the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering, Ornan demonstrates a willingness to give up something valuable for the sake of honoring God. This act of generosity goes beyond a simple transaction; it is an expression of faith and obedience. Ornan's words, "let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes," show a humble submission to God's will, even if it means giving up his possessions. In a broader sense, Ornan's actions can be seen as a foreshadowing of the sacrificial system that would be established under the Mosaic law, where offerings of animals, grain, and other goods were made to atone for sins and show devotion to God. Through Ornan's example, we are reminded of the importance of giving sacrificially in our worship and the blessings that come from wholehearted obedience to God.
