Book of 1 Chronicles - Chapter 6 - Verse 77

6:77
Unto the rest of the children of Merari were given out of the tribe of Zebulun, Rimmon with her suburbs, Tabor with her suburbs:

Meaning

Within the context of the book of Joshua, this verse is part of the passage detailing the allotment of land to the various tribes of Israel after they entered the Promised Land. In this specific verse, the tribe of Zebulun is mentioned as giving land to the rest of the children of Merari. Rimmon and Tabor are two of the cities or regions that were given as territories to the Merarites, who were one of the Levitical families responsible for the tabernacle and temple duties. The term "suburbs" refers to the surrounding villages or fields that accompanied the main city or region and provided additional resources or living space. By identifying the specific locations and territories assigned to each tribe or family within the larger narrative of the division of the land, the book of Joshua highlights the meticulous planning and distribution of God's promised inheritance to his people according to their tribal and familial lines.

Theological Overview

Merari was one of the three Levitical clans responsible for the transport and care of the tabernacle and its furnishings. In this particular verse, we see the assignment of cities to the descendants of Merari from the tribe of Zebulun. Rimmon and Tabor were given to them along with their surrounding pasturelands. The word "Rimmon" is thought to mean "pomegranate" in Hebrew, symbolizing abundance and fruitfulness. Tabor, on the other hand, is said to mean "height" or "elevation," which could point to the strategic location of the city on a hill. This allocation of cities serves as a reminder of God's provision and care for the Levites as they carried out their sacred duties. It also highlights the importance of geographical locations in the distribution of land among the tribes of Israel, demonstrating God's sovereignty over all aspects of their lives.
