Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 16 - Verse 1

16:1
Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.

Meaning

In this verse, the apostle Paul is addressing the Corinthians regarding a collection that is to be made for the saints. The term "saints" refers to believers in Christ who are considered holy and set apart for God. Paul had already instructed the churches in Galatia to make similar collections, and he now urges the Corinthians to do the same. The purpose of this collection was to support fellow Christians who were facing difficulty or poverty, either due to persecution or other challenges. Paul believed in the principle of sharing resources within the body of believers, so that no one would be in need. By emphasizing the importance of this collection, Paul was encouraging the Corinthians to show their love and care for their fellow Christians, demonstrating the unity and generosity that should characterize the church. As Christians, we are called to support and care for one another, following the example of Christ who gave sacrificially for our sakes.

Theological Overview

The verse "Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye" from Corinthians 16:1 is significant in the context of Paul's letters to the Corinthians. The phrase "collection for the saints" refers to the financial contribution that the Corinthian church was expected to make for the benefit of fellow believers in need, particularly those in Jerusalem. This act of giving was a tangible expression of the unity and mutual care among the early Christian communities. The mention of Paul's instructions to the churches of Galatia underscores the importance of consistency in carrying out this charitable act across different congregations. The word "order" suggests that Paul's directive was not merely a suggestion but a command to be obeyed. This verse reminds us of the biblical principle of generosity and support for fellow believers in times of need, highlighting the value of communal responsibility and compassion within the body of Christ.
