Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 6 - Verse 16

6:16
What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.

Meaning

Paul's letter to the Corinthians addresses the concept of sexual immorality and the consequences that come with it. In this particular verse, Paul is emphasizing the idea that engaging in sexual relations with a prostitute is more than just a physical act—it is a union that makes the two individuals become one body. This passage highlights the spiritual and emotional implications of sexual intimacy and the importance of reserving such a special bond for a committed and loving relationship. By using the analogy of becoming one flesh, Paul is urging believers to understand the sacredness of their bodies and the significance of their actions. This verse serves as a reminder to treat oneself and others with respect, honor, and dignity, recognizing the deep connection that is formed through physical intimacy. It underscores the need for believers to uphold moral standards and strive for purity in their relationships, in order to honor themselves, their partners, and God.
