Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 9 - Verse 14

9:14
Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Meaning

In this verse, it is explained that the Lord has established a system where those who preach the gospel should be able to sustain themselves by living off of the gospel. This is a principle that dates back to biblical times, where those who dedicated their lives to spreading the word of God were supported by the community they served. By providing for the needs of those who preach the gospel, believers are able to ensure that the message continues to be shared far and wide. This verse highlights the importance of supporting those who dedicate their lives to spreading the teachings of the Lord, as they are fulfilling a crucial role in the spiritual growth and guidance of the community. By taking care of the material needs of those who preach the gospel, believers are able to help ensure the continued spread of the message and the strengthening of the faith of all who hear it.

Theological Overview

Paul's words in this verse emphasize the divine principle that those who are dedicated to preaching the gospel should be supported by the gospel itself. This concept is rooted in the idea that those who labor in spreading the message of salvation should also be able to benefit from it materially. It reflects a reciprocal relationship between the preachers and the believers they serve, highlighting the importance of providing for the physical needs of those who are committed to the spiritual well-being of the community. The word "ordained" in this verse suggests a deliberate and intentional decision made by the Lord to establish this principle of support for gospel preachers. This theological interpretation underscores the value and significance of financially supporting those who are devoted to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ, recognizing their vital role in the spiritual growth and nourishment of believers.
