Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 10 - Verse 14

10:14
And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.

Meaning

In this verse from the Bible, Saul's uncle queries him about his whereabouts along with his servant. Saul's response indicates that they were on a mission to find lost donkeys. However, unable to locate the animals, they decided to seek the help of the prophet Samuel. This interaction sets the stage for a significant turning point in Saul's life, as he is about to become anointed as the first King of Israel by Samuel. The verse serves as a prelude to the divine appointment that will shape the course of Saul's destiny and the history of the Israelite nation. It demonstrates the importance of seeking guidance from spiritual leaders in times of need and highlights the theme of divine providence throughout the narrative of Saul's rise to kingship. The dialogue between Saul and his uncle also conveys the importance of humility and obedience in the face of a higher calling, as Saul embarks on a journey that will lead to his anointing as the chosen leader of God's people.

Theological Overview

One of the interesting theological aspects of this verse is the mention of seeking after asses. In biblical times, donkeys were valuable animals and losing them would have been a significant loss for a family. However, in a theological context, the donkeys could symbolize something more. Donkeys are often associated with humility and servanthood in the Bible. Therefore, Saul's mission to seek the lost asses could be seen as a metaphor for his humble beginnings before he became king. Additionally, the fact that Saul goes to Samuel after losing the asses could symbolize his turning to God in times of need and seeking guidance from a prophet. This shows Saul's reliance on God and his willingness to submit to His will. Overall, this verse can be interpreted as a reminder to remain humble, seek guidance from God, and trust in His provision.
