Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 18 - Verse 17

18:17
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD'S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

Meaning

In this verse from 1 Samuel 18:17, we see King Saul offering his daughter Merab to David as a wife, with one condition - that he proves himself in battle and fights the Lord's battles. Saul's intention here is to see if David is truly valiant and capable of leading his army and defending their land against the Philistines. By offering his daughter in marriage, Saul is not only seeking to strengthen his bond with David but also to test his loyalty and dedication to the kingdom. However, Saul also expresses a subtle desire for David to face the dangers of battle, as he mentions that he does not want his own hand to be the cause of harm towards David, but rather hopes that the Philistines will be the ones to pose a threat to him. This verse highlights the complex relationships and political maneuvers that were common in the ancient biblical times, where marriages were often used as alliances and strategies in the pursuit of power and security.
