Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 26 - Verse 18

26:18
And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.

Meaning

This verse from 2 Chronicles 26:18-19 tells the story of Uzziah, a king of Judah, who attempted to burn incense in the temple. The priests, who were the only ones authorized to perform this sacred duty, confronted Uzziah and informed him that it was not his right to burn incense to the Lord. They reminded him that only the descendants of Aaron, the high priest, were consecrated for this task. By trying to usurp the authority of the priests, Uzziah had trespassed against the Lord. The priests instructed him to leave the sanctuary, as his actions were dishonoring to God. This passage serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and honoring the designated roles and responsibilities within the religious community. It also reinforces the principle that individuals should not overstep their boundaries or take on tasks that are not meant for them. Ultimately, this verse highlights the significance of obedience, humility, and reverence in serving the Lord.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see a clear example of the importance of following the specific instructions and roles set by God. Uzziah, the king, was reprimanded for attempting to burn incense unto the Lord, a duty reserved for the Levitical priests. The theological interpretation of this passage highlights the concept of obedience and reverence for God's commands. The sons of Aaron were consecrated for the task of burning incense, signifying a sanctified and set apart role within the priesthood. By attempting to take on this role himself, Uzziah went against the divine order established by God, resulting in his trespass and loss of honor. This incident serves as a reminder for us to respect the roles and responsibilities assigned to us by God, recognizing the importance of obedience and humility in serving Him.
