Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 7 - Verse 21

7:21
And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it; so that he shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and unto this house?

Meaning

This verse comes from 2 Chronicles 7:21, and it talks about the consequences of disobedience towards God. The "house" that is being referred to here is the Temple of Solomon, a place that was meant to be a symbol of God's presence among His people. The verse implies that if the people turn away from God and His teachings, even such a revered and high place like the Temple will become a source of astonishment and wonder for those who pass by. It suggests that the destruction or desolation of the house would be so great that people would be compelled to question why such a fate befell it and the land it stood on. This verse serves as a warning about the importance of remaining faithful and obedient to God, as even the most sacred and lofty institutions can be brought low if His commandments are not followed. It prompts reflection on the consequences of straying from the path of righteousness and serves as a reminder of the power and consequences of God's actions in response to human actions.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse can be found in the context in which it was written. The verse comes from the book of 2 Chronicles in the Old Testament and describes the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. The house being referred to is the temple, which was once a place of worship and reverence for the people of Israel. The destruction of this high house, symbolizing God's presence among his people, serves as a warning to all who pass by. It is a reminder of the consequences of disobeying God and turning away from His commandments. The astonishment that this house elicits prompts individuals to question why the Lord allowed such destruction to occur. This serves as a powerful lesson on the importance of faithfulness and obedience to God's will, as well as a reminder of the consequences of straying from His path.
