Book of 2 Corinthians - Chapter 11 - Verse 20

11:20
For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.

Meaning

The verse highlights the idea that believers may face various forms of suffering and mistreatment at the hands of others, particularly false teachers or leaders within the Christian community. Being brought into bondage, devoured, taken advantage of, or physically assaulted are all examples of the kinds of injustices that may be inflicted upon followers of Christ. These actions are seen as not only a violation of personal boundaries but also a betrayal of the trust and respect that should exist among members of the faith community. Ultimately, the verse emphasizes the importance of standing up against such mistreatment and not allowing oneself to be controlled or manipulated by those who seek to do harm. It serves as a reminder for believers to remain vigilant in protecting themselves from those who may seek to exploit or harm them, and to seek justice and righteousness in the face of adversity.

Theological Overview

This verse highlights the importance of resisting oppression and exploitation, as well as the need to stand firm in the face of abuse and mistreatment. The language used in this verse underscores the injustice and harm that can result from allowing oneself to be subjected to the control and domination of others. From a theological standpoint, this verse serves as a reminder of the need to uphold principles of justice, equality, and respect for human dignity. It calls upon believers to resist being oppressed or harmed by others, and instead stand firm in their faith, refusing to be subjugated or mistreated. Through this interpretation, the verse encourages individuals to reject any attempts to diminish their worth or infringe upon their rights, urging them to strive for liberation and empowerment in the face of adversity.
