Book of 2 Corinthians - Chapter 2 - Verse 15

2:15
For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

Meaning

When the Bible talks about believers being a sweet savour of Christ to God, it is highlighting the impact that followers of Christ have on those around them. The term "sweet savour" refers to a pleasing aroma, indicating that the lives of believers are a source of joy and satisfaction to God. This verse emphasizes that our relationship with God through Christ should be evident in the way we live our lives and interact with others. Our actions, attitudes, and words should reflect the love and grace of Jesus Christ in such a way that it is pleasing to God.

Furthermore, the verse also mentions that this sweet savour is present both in those who are saved and those who perish. This suggests that the witness of believers can have a dual effect - it can lead some to salvation while others may reject it. Ultimately, believers are called to be faithful witnesses regardless of the response they receive, trusting that God will work through them to accomplish His purposes. By being a sweet savour of Christ, believers have the opportunity to bring the fragrance of Christ to a world in need of His love and redemption.

Theological Overview

Looking at the theological interpretation of this verse, we see that Paul is referencing the concept of believers being a sweet aroma or savour to God through their connection with Christ. The imagery of a sweet savour was often used in the Old Testament to depict the pleasing nature of sacrifices to God. In this context, Paul is emphasizing that believers are a pleasing offering to God because of their union with Christ. This points to the idea that our lives, when lived in accordance with Christ's teachings, are a fragrant offering to God, bringing Him delight and joy. Additionally, the mention of this savour being present both in those who are saved and those who perish highlights the universal impact of believers' lives on those around them. Whether someone accepts or rejects the message of Christ, the fragrance of believers' faith is still present. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of living a life that is pleasing to God and reflective of Christ's love, in order to be a sweet savour to Him and inspire others to seek salvation.
