Book of 2 Corinthians - Chapter 8 - Verse 7

8:7
Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

Meaning

This verse from the book of 2 Corinthians highlights the importance of cultivating various virtues in the Christian life. The verse lists several qualities that believers should strive to excel in, including faith, speech, knowledge, diligence, and love. The verse encourages believers to not only grow in these qualities but also to abound in grace. Grace, in this context, refers to the unmerited favor and blessing that God bestows upon His people. By abounding in grace, believers are called to demonstrate God's love, forgiveness, and mercy in their relationships with others. This verse serves as a reminder for Christians to continually strive for spiritual growth and maturity, not just in individual areas of their lives, but in embodying the grace of God in their interactions with others as well.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the Apostle Paul encourages the Corinthians to excel in various aspects of their faith, such as in faith itself, in speaking about their faith, in knowledge of God's Word, in perseverance, and in love for others. Paul emphasizes the importance of not just excelling in these areas individually, but also in the overarching grace of giving. This call to abound in grace is a reminder to the Corinthians, and to us, that all blessings and abilities we possess are gifts from God. Therefore, as we grow in faith, knowledge, and love, we should also grow in the grace of giving, recognizing that it is through generous and sacrificial giving that we reflect the ultimate grace shown to us through Jesus Christ. This verse challenges us to examine how we are stewarding all the blessings God has given us, not just for our own benefit, but for the benefit of others and for the glory of God.
