Book of 2 John - Chapter 1 - Verse 5

1:5
And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

Meaning

This verse is a reminder of the importance of love and unity among believers. The author, likely the Apostle John, is urging the lady (either a specific individual or a symbolic representation of the church) to continue in the commandment of love that has been present from the beginning of the Christian faith. The emphasis is on the enduring nature of this commandment, as something that has always been fundamental to the Christian way of life. By not presenting a new commandment, the author is highlighting the consistency and significance of love in Christian teaching. Love is central to the Christian faith, as it reflects the love that God has for His people and the love that believers are called to have for one another. This verse serves as a call to action for all followers of Christ to demonstrate love, kindness, and unity towards one another, following the example set by Jesus Christ and the early church.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse "And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another," it is important to understand the context in which it was written. The author is appealing to the recipient to continue in the practice of love towards others, emphasizing that this is not a new directive but rather a fundamental teaching that has been passed down from the beginning. This underscores the importance of love in the Christian faith, as it is not merely a suggestion but a commandment that is rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Additionally, the mention of loving one another reflects the communal aspect of Christian life, highlighting the need for believers to show love and compassion towards their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.
