Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 17 - Verse 32

17:32
So they feared the LORD, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.

Meaning

Within this verse, it is stated that the people feared the LORD, but instead of following the proper protocol, they appointed priests from among the common people to serve in the high places. The high places were locations where pagan worship and sacrifices took place, directly going against the laws set forth by the LORD. By appointing priests from the lowest classes of society, the people were essentially disregarding the importance of the priesthood and the necessity of proper qualifications for such a holy position. This act of disobedience led to corruption within the religious practices of the people, as these unauthorized priests conducted sacrifices in places not designated for such rituals.

This verse serves as a warning against straying from the teachings and requirements set by the LORD. It highlights the consequences that come from neglecting the proper order and structure within religious practices. The people's fear of the LORD was not enough to prevent them from deviating from His instructions, ultimately leading to a distortion of their worship. As readers, we are reminded of the importance of following the guidelines set by God and not allowing fear or ignorance to lead us astray from His truth.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse involves understanding the concept of fear of the Lord and how it can be distorted. The fear of the Lord is typically seen as a positive reverence and respect for God, leading to obedience and worship. However, in this instance, the people's fear of the Lord led them to create their own priests from among the lowest in society to perform sacrifices in high places. This act was a violation of the proper priesthood and sacrificial system established by God. The word 'lowest' carries significance as it implies a disregard for the qualifications and standards set by God for those serving as priests. The people's actions show a deviation from true worship and an attempt to manipulate their relationship with God through unauthorized means. This verse serves as a cautionary example of the dangers of compromising religious practices and allowing fear to drive one's actions in ways that are contrary to God's will.
