Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 2 - Verse 19

2:19
And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is nought, and the ground barren.

Meaning

This verse from the book of 2 Kings in the Bible portrays a situation where the men of a city are seeking help from the prophet Elisha. They acknowledge that the city is pleasant to look upon, but they are facing a critical issue - the water is bad, and the land is unproductive. The men recognize that while the outward appearance of their city may be pleasing, the essential resources needed to sustain life are lacking. This verse serves as a reminder that outward appearances can be deceiving, and true prosperity and flourishing come from having a solid foundation and essential resources in place. It also highlights the importance of seeking help and guidance when facing challenges, as the men turn to Elisha for assistance in resolving their pressing issue of water scarcity and barren land.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, the men of the city are expressing their concerns to the prophet Elisha about the state of their city. They acknowledge the aesthetic beauty of their city, referring to it as pleasant, but also bring to his attention a critical issue - the water is undrinkable, and the land is unfruitful. This conversation with Elisha illustrates the importance of the natural resources needed for life and sustenance. The theological interpretation here emphasizes the necessity of both physical and spiritual sustenance. Just as the people in the city were facing a physical drought, we can also experience spiritual dryness in our lives. The reassuring aspect of this dialogue is that the people sought the help of a prophet, recognizing the need for divine intervention in their situation. In a world where we may encounter barrenness and lack, turning to God and seeking His guidance can bring about transformation and restoration, just as Elisha performed miracles to remedy the situation in the city.
