Book of 2 Samuel - Chapter 19 - Verse 11

19:11
And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.

Meaning

King David sent a message to the priests Zadok and Abiathar to communicate with the elders of Judah, questioning why they were hesitant to bring him back to his rightful place as king. The king was puzzled as to why the people of Judah were not taking the initiative to welcome him back, especially since the rest of Israel had already expressed their support and loyalty to him. This verse reflects David's desire to reunite his kingdom and resume his leadership role, highlighting the importance of the people's allegiance and unity. It also underscores the significance of communication and cooperation among the various factions of the Israelite community. By reaching out to the priests and elders, David sought to address any misunderstandings or concerns that may have arisen during his absence, emphasizing the need for unity and harmony within the kingdom.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse highlights King David's authority and leadership among the people of Judah. The fact that King David sent a message to the priests, Zadok and Abiathar, shows his concern for the unity and well-being of his kingdom. By asking the elders of Judah why they were hesitant to bring him back to his house, King David is asserting his rightful place as the ruler chosen by God. This verse also demonstrates the importance of communication and unity in the Israelite community, as the speech of all Israel had come to the king's house. The word "last" in this context could also imply a sense of urgency, urging the elders to act promptly and fulfill their duty to bring the king back to his rightful place. Overall, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God's chosen leaders and the need for unity among the people of Israel.
