Book of 2 Timothy - Chapter 2 - Verse 22

2:22
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Meaning

Within this verse, believers are urged to resist the temptations of youthful desires that can lead them away from the path of righteousness. Instead, they are encouraged to focus on pursuing a life guided by faith, love, and peace, while being in the company of fellow believers who sincerely call upon the Lord with pure intentions. By fleeing from lust and embracing virtues such as righteousness, faith, charity, and peace, individuals can cultivate a closer relationship with God and experience the fulfillment that comes from living a life in accordance with His teachings. This verse serves as a reminder to prioritize spiritual growth and seek companionship with those who share the same dedication to living a life of faith and purity. By surrounding themselves with like-minded individuals, believers can find strength and support in their journey of following God's will.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse highlights the contrast between worldly desires, often associated with youth, and the virtues that believers should cultivate. By urging believers to flee youthful lusts, the Apostle Paul is emphasizing the dangers of giving in to impulsive and sinful desires that can lead one away from God. Instead, believers are encouraged to pursue righteousness, faith, charity, and peace. These virtues are essential for living a life that is pleasing to God and in line with His teachings.

When examining the word "flee" in this context, it conveys a sense of urgency and decisiveness. Believers are not merely advised to avoid youthful lusts but to actively run away from them. This word choice underscores the importance of taking deliberate action to resist temptation and stay on the path of righteousness. On the other hand, the word "follow" implies that believers should actively pursue virtues such as righteousness, faith, charity, and peace. This suggests a continuous journey towards spiritual growth and maturity in Christ.
