Book of Acts - Chapter 22 - Verse 18

22:18
And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

Meaning

In this verse from the New Testament book of Acts, the apostle Paul is recounting an encounter he had with Jesus on the road to Damascus. Jesus appears to Paul and instructs him to leave Jerusalem quickly because the people there will not listen to his message about Jesus. This moment marked a significant turning point in Paul's life, as he went from being a persecutor of Christians to becoming one of the most influential figures in the early Christian church. Paul's mission to spread the message of Jesus' teachings was met with resistance and hostility in Jerusalem, prompting Jesus to intervene and redirect Paul's efforts towards reaching out to other communities. This verse underscores the challenges and opposition that early Christians faced in spreading their message, but also highlights the importance of perseverance and obedience to the calling of God.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the theological interpretation points to the importance of divine guidance and obedience to God's will. The command to make haste and quickly leave Jerusalem reveals God's urgency in protecting the Apostle Paul and ensuring the continuation of his mission to spread the Gospel. The rejection of Paul's testimony by the people of Jerusalem highlights the resistance often faced by those who proclaim the message of Christ. It serves as a reminder that not everyone will receive or accept the message of salvation. Through this verse, we see the theme of persecution and the challenges faced by believers in sharing their faith. The word "haste" emphasizes the need for immediate action and obedience to God's instructions, even in the face of opposition. Overall, this verse illustrates the divine guidance and protection that God provides to His followers, as well as the reality of encountering resistance in spreading the message of Christ.
