Book of Acts - Chapter 5 - Verse 24

5:24
Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.

Meaning

Upon hearing Peter and John boldly proclaiming the gospel and performing miracles, the high priest, captain of the temple, and chief priests were filled with doubt and uncertainty. They were puzzled by the growing influence and impact of these two apostles on the people. They were likely concerned about losing their authority and control over the Jewish community as more and more individuals were drawn to the teachings of Peter and John. The religious leaders were accustomed to being in charge and maintaining their status quo, so the rapid spread of the Christian message posed a threat to their power and position. Their doubts reflected their fear of the unknown and their reluctance to accept a new movement that challenged their beliefs and traditions. This verse serves as a reminder that change can be unsettling for those who hold positions of authority, but ultimately, God's plans cannot be thwarted by human skepticism or resistance.
