Book of Daniel - Chapter 11 - Verse 6

11:6
And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.

Meaning

This verse, found in the book of Daniel, speaks of a prophecy regarding a future alliance between two kingdoms, the king of the north and the king's daughter of the south. Scholars believe that this verse is referring to the political interactions between the Seleucid Empire in the north and the Ptolemaic Kingdom in the south during the time of the ancient world. The alliance mentioned was intended to bring peace and stability to the region. However, the verse goes on to indicate that the agreement would not be successful, as the power of the arm of the king's daughter of the south would not prevail, and both she and her supporters would be given up and ultimately defeated. This prophecy serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of human alliances and the transient nature of power in the political realm.

Theological Overview

This verse in the book of Daniel describes a prophecy about political alliances and betrayals between the kingdoms of the North and the South. The theological interpretation of this verse suggests that it symbolizes the shifting powers and alliances that occur throughout history. The imagery of the king's daughter of the South coming to make an agreement with the king of the North represents diplomacy and attempts at peace between nations. However, the verse also foretells that the agreement will ultimately fail, with neither party retaining power or standing strong. This can be seen as a warning about the instability of human alliances and the ultimate sovereignty of God over the affairs of nations. Through word studies, we can delve deeper into the meaning of terms such as 'agreement' and 'power of the arm' to gain a clearer understanding of the dynamics at play in this prophecy. Overall, this verse serves as a reminder to trust in God's ultimate plan and not in the fleeting alliances of this world.
