Book of Deuteronomy - Chapter 18 - Verse 18

18:18
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Deuteronomy prophesizes the coming of a great Prophet from among the brethren of the Israelites, who will be like Moses. This Prophet will be chosen by God to speak on His behalf, delivering His words to the people and fulfilling His commands. This prophecy is often interpreted in Christian theology as a foreshadowing of the coming of Jesus Christ, who was indeed a Prophet like Moses and spoke the words of God. Jesus is seen as the ultimate fulfillment of this prophecy, as he not only spoke on behalf of God but also revealed God's plan for salvation through his life, death, and resurrection. This verse serves as a reminder of the continuity of God's plan throughout history, from the time of Moses to the coming of Jesus and beyond. It highlights the importance of listening to the words of God as spoken through his chosen messengers, ultimately leading to salvation and eternal life.

Theological Overview

Deuteronomy 18:18 is a significant prophecy in the Old Testament that speaks of a coming Prophet who will be like Moses. This promise was fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, who is seen as the ultimate fulfillment of this prophecy. Jesus, like Moses, was a leader, lawgiver, and deliverer of God's people. The phrase "I will put my words in his mouth" reminds us of Jesus' divine authority and the fact that He only spoke what the Father commanded Him to say. This verse also highlights the unique relationship between God and His chosen Prophet, Jesus, indicating that He is the one whom God has sent to speak on His behalf. The theological interpretation of this verse points to Jesus as the ultimate Prophet, the Word of God incarnate, who came to reveal God's will and bring salvation to all who believe in Him. Through Jesus, God has provided the perfect mediator between Himself and humanity, fulfilling the role of Prophet in the most perfect way possible.
