Book of Deuteronomy - Chapter 20 - Verse 2

20:2
And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

Meaning

Within the context of the verse, the role of the priest in approaching the people before battle holds great significance. In ancient times, the priest was seen as a mediator between the people and God, entrusted with seeking divine guidance and blessing for the military campaign ahead. By speaking to the people before battle, the priest could offer words of encouragement, impart wisdom, and remind the soldiers of the importance of faith and obedience to God's will. This act not only helped to bolster the morale of the troops but also served as a spiritual preparation for the challenges they were about to face. The presence of the priest symbolized the belief that victory in battle was not solely determined by human strength or strategy, but by the favor and protection of God. Therefore, the priest's approach to the people before battle was a ritual steeped in faith, tradition, and the understanding that their success relied on more than just military might.
