1:13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Meaning

In this verse, the apostle Paul is reminding the Ephesians that they placed their trust in Jesus Christ after hearing the word of truth, which is the gospel of their salvation. This gospel message proclaimed the good news of Jesus' sacrificial death and resurrection, offering forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who believe in Him. When they believed in Jesus, they were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. This seal signifies both ownership and security. By placing their faith in Jesus, the Ephesians were marked as belonging to God and were guaranteed the promised blessings of salvation, including the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. This seal of the Spirit serves as a confirmation and guarantee of their salvation, ensuring that they will one day receive the full inheritance of eternal life in Christ.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse is that it emphasizes the sequence of events that occur in the process of salvation. It begins with hearing the word of truth, which refers to the message of the gospel. When a person hears and believes this message, they place their trust in Christ for salvation. This act of belief results in being sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which signifies the believer's security in their salvation and the guarantee of their future inheritance in Christ. The concept of sealing with the Holy Spirit highlights the idea of ownership, protection, and identification with God. This verse reveals the crucial role of faith in receiving the Holy Spirit and experiencing the fullness of salvation.
