Book of Exodus - Chapter 16 - Verse 4

16:4
Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

Meaning

The verse from the Bible where the LORD promises to rain bread from heaven for the Israelites and instructs them to gather a certain amount each day serves as a test of obedience and faith. The LORD's provision of manna in the wilderness was not only to sustain the people physically but also to test their willingness to follow His commands. By giving specific instructions on how much manna they were allowed to gather each day, the LORD was challenging the Israelites to trust in His provision and obey His laws. This verse highlights the importance of obedience and faith in God's plan, as well as the need for people to rely on His provision rather than their own efforts. It serves as a reminder that God's blessings are given with a purpose, often to test our commitment to Him and our willingness to walk according to His will.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the Lord speaks to Moses, promising to rain bread from heaven for the Israelites to eat. This miraculous provision of food, known as manna, was a test of the people's obedience to God's commandments. By providing just enough manna for each person to gather a certain amount every day, God wanted to see if the Israelites would trust in His provision and follow His law. This act of divine provision not only met the immediate physical needs of the people but also served as a means of teaching them to rely on God's faithfulness and obedience to His commands. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes God's care for His people and His desire for them to demonstrate their faith through obedience. Additionally, a word study on the term "manna" reveals that it means "what is it?" in Hebrew, highlighting the mysterious and supernatural nature of this provision from heaven.
