Book of Exodus - Chapter 19 - Verse 14

19:14
And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.

Meaning

After receiving the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai, Moses descended from the mountain and returned to the Israelites. Upon his return, Moses took the time to sanctify the people, which involved a process of purification and consecration to God. The act of sanctifying the people was symbolic of setting them apart for a holy purpose and reminding them of their covenant with God. Additionally, the people were instructed to wash their clothes as a physical symbol of cleansing and preparation for the presence of God. This act of washing their clothes was not just a physical cleansing, but a spiritual one as well, signifying their desire to come before God with clean hearts and minds. Through these actions, Moses prepared the people to receive and live by the commandments given to them, reinforcing the importance of obedience and devotion to God in their daily lives.
