Book of Exodus - Chapter 22 - Verse 16

22:16
And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Exodus addresses the practice of enticement and pre-marital relations in ancient Israelite culture. In this context, if a man entices an unmarried woman and sleeps with her, he is required to take responsibility for his actions by marrying her. This law was put in place to protect the woman's honor and ensure that she is not left in a vulnerable position in society. Marriage was seen as a way to provide stability and security for women in a patriarchal society. By requiring the man to marry the woman he has enticed, the law ensures that he takes full responsibility for his actions and provides for her welfare. This verse highlights the importance of upholding moral standards and treating others with respect and dignity in relationships.
