Book of Exodus - Chapter 26 - Verse 35

26:35
And thou shalt set the table without the veil, and the candlestick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Exodus in the Old Testament, God instructs Moses on how the items in the tabernacle should be arranged. The table for the Bread of the Presence is to be placed outside the veil that separates the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. This signifies that the provision and sustenance provided by the bread are accessible to all who come seeking God's presence. The table is to be positioned on the north side of the tabernacle, symbolizing a place of honor and importance. Opposite the table, on the south side, is to be placed the golden candlestick, representing the light of God's presence that illuminates and guides His people. The arrangement of these items showcases the importance of hospitality, sustenance, and illumination in the context of worshipping and seeking communion with God.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse from Exodus 40:22 highlights the significance of the specific placement of the table and the candlestick within the tabernacle. The positioning of the table outside the veil emphasizes the themes of accessibility and hospitality, as it signifies the provision of nourishment for the priests who served in the tabernacle. This placement symbolizes the sustenance provided by God for His people, both physically and spiritually. The candlestick being placed opposite the table on the south side signifies the importance of illumination and light within the tabernacle. It represents the presence of God as the source of all light and truth, guiding His people on their spiritual journey. The table being on the north side further emphasizes the idea of God's provision and abundance, as the north is often associated with richness and blessings in biblical imagery.
