Book of Exodus - Chapter 30 - Verse 36

30:36
And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy.

Meaning

In this verse, God is instructing Moses to take a portion of the manna that He provided to the Israelites in the wilderness and to set it aside as a special offering before the testimony in the tabernacle. This act symbolized the holiness and purity of the manna as a gift from God. By beating some of it very small, it showed a careful and deliberate process of preparation for the offering. Placing it before the testimony emphasized its significance as a sacred offering in the presence of God.

The tabernacle of the congregation was where the Israelites gathered to worship and seek God's presence, and it served as a meeting place between God and His people. By placing the manna before the testimony within this tabernacle, it signified the importance of God's provision and presence in the lives of the Israelites. This act of setting aside a portion of the manna as "most holy" highlighted the reverence and respect that the Israelites were to have for God and His gifts.

Overall, this verse teaches us the importance of recognizing and honoring the holiness of God's provision in our lives. It reminds us to set aside special offerings as a symbol of our gratitude and reverence for God's blessings, and to approach His presence with humility and respect.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of this verse from Exodus 30:36 revolves around the symbolism of beating the incense very small before putting it in the tabernacle. This act of beating the incense represents the process of breaking down our pride and ego before coming into God's presence. It serves as a reminder of the humility and reverence we should have when approaching the holy presence of God in worship. The emphasis on the act being done 'very small' signifies the importance of attention to detail and the meticulous care we should have in our worship and devotion to God. Additionally, the fact that the incense is placed before the testimony in the tabernacle where God meets with His people highlights the significance of our prayers and offerings in creating a sacred space for communion with God. This verse emphasizes the holiness of the space where God's presence dwells and the purity of heart required to come before Him.
