Book of Exodus - Chapter 33 - Verse 7

33:7
And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.

Meaning

When Moses took the tabernacle and pitched it outside the camp, it symbolized the presence of the Lord among his people. The Tabernacle of the congregation became a central meeting place for those seeking the Lord. By placing it outside the camp, it demonstrated that God's presence was not limited to a specific location but was accessible to all who sought him. This physical structure served as a place of worship, sacrifice, and community gathering for the Israelites. It was where they could come together to seek forgiveness, guidance, and direction from the Lord. The act of everyone coming out to the tabernacle exemplifies the importance of communal worship and the unity of God's people in seeking His presence. This verse highlights the significance of setting aside a dedicated space for worship and gathering as a congregation to seek the Lord.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse is that Moses' decision to pitch the tabernacle outside the camp symbolizes the importance of separating oneself from the distractions and impurities of the world in order to seek the presence of the Lord. By setting up the Tabernacle of the congregation away from the camp, Moses emphasized the need for a sacred space where the people could come together to seek God and worship Him. This act served as a physical reminder to the Israelites of the importance of prioritizing their relationship with the Lord above all else. Additionally, the fact that everyone who sought the Lord went out to the tabernacle of the congregation demonstrates the unity and commitment of the people in their desire to draw near to God. The tabernacle became a central place of gathering and worship, where the Israelites could come together to seek God's presence and guidance.
