Book of Exodus - Chapter 40 - Verse 20

40:20
And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark:

Meaning

When Moses placed the tablets of testimony (the Ten Commandments) into the ark of the covenant, he was symbolically placing God's law in the most sacred place. The ark, which was made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold, represented God's presence among the Israelites. By setting the staves on the ark, it signified that the ark was ready to be carried on their journeys, as instructed by God. The mercy seat, which was placed above the ark, symbolized God's presence and his ability to forgive sins. It was here that the high priest would sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice on the Day of Atonement to atone for the sins of the people. Overall, this verse highlights the importance of God's law, his presence, and his mercy in the lives of the Israelites, and serves as a reminder of the covenant relationship between God and his chosen people.

Theological Overview

Genesis 35:14 recounts the moment when Jacob placed the testimony into the Ark of the Covenant. This act symbolized the covenant God made with the Israelites and foreshadowed the ultimate covenant fulfilled in Christ. The "testimony" referred to the Ten Commandments, which were a testimony of God's will and law for His people. Placing the tablets in the Ark emphasized the importance of obeying God's commands. The staves on the sides of the Ark were used to carry it, signifying the portable nature of God's presence with His people as they journeyed through the wilderness. The mercy seat placed above the Ark represented God's presence and His willingness to forgive sins when the blood of sacrifices was sprinkled on it during the Day of Atonement. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of God's faithfulness in keeping His promises and His mercy towards His people.
