Book of Exodus - Chapter 9 - Verse 11

9:11
And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Exodus, we see the confrontation between Moses and the magicians of Egypt. The magicians were attempting to replicate the miracles performed by Moses, but they were unable to do so because they were afflicted with boils. This event demonstrates the power of God over the forces of evil and showcases the limitations of human sorcery. The boils symbolize a punishment for the magicians' attempts to deceive and manipulate through their magical practices. The fact that the boils affected not only the magicians but all the Egyptians as well highlights the widespread impact of God's judgment on those who oppose His will. This verse serves as a reminder of the futility of relying on human wisdom and power in the face of God's supremacy and highlights the importance of recognizing and submitting to His authority.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Exodus, we see the power of God displayed through the affliction of boils on the magicians and the Egyptians. The magicians, who were able to replicate some of the signs and wonders performed by Moses at the beginning of the plagues in Egypt, were unable to stand before Moses due to the severity of the boils inflicted upon them. The Hebrew word for "boils" used in this verse is "שְׁחִין" (shechin), which refers to a painful inflammatory swelling or eruption on the skin. The presence of these boils not only incapacitated the magicians but also served as a visible and tangible sign of God's judgment against the Egyptians. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the superiority of God's power over all other forces, including the abilities of the magicians. It underscores the importance of recognizing God's sovereignty and authority in the midst of adversity and demonstrates the consequences of resisting His will.
