Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 10 - Verse 7

10:7
And one cherub stretched forth his hand from between the cherubims unto the fire that was between the cherubims, and took thereof, and put it into the hands of him that was clothed with linen: who took it, and went out.

Meaning

Within the context of the verse, the cherubim are angelic beings often associated with guarding the presence of God and symbolizing divine protection. In this particular passage, the imagery of the cherub stretching forth his hand towards the fire between the cherubim signifies a transfer or exchange taking place. The fire is often interpreted as a representation of God's divine presence or power. The act of taking the fire and putting it into the hands of the one clothed in linen can be seen as a symbolic gesture of transferring this divine power or authority. The individual in linen is typically understood to be a messenger of God or a servant carrying out His will. By conveying the fire from the cherub to this individual, it could symbolize the bestowing of this divine power or instruction for a specific purpose.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse hinges on the symbolic significance of the actions described. The cherubim, often depicted as angelic beings in the Bible, are guardians of the holiness of God. Their presence near the fire is a representation of God's judgment and purification. The act of taking fire from between the cherubim and giving it to the man dressed in linen symbolizes the transfer of God's holiness and righteousness to his appointed servant. This action could signify the process of sanctification, where humans are made holy through God's grace. The man in linen, possibly a priestly figure, receives the fire and then leaves the presence of the cherubim, perhaps indicating a mission or task entrusted to him by God. Overall, this verse showcases the themes of holiness, judgment, and divine commission, highlighting the importance of the relationship between God and his chosen people.
