Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 11 - Verse 21

11:21
But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord GOD.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Ezekiel, the Lord GOD is speaking about those who follow their detestable and abominable desires. The phrase "whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations" refers to individuals who continually pursue wickedness and immorality, allowing their hearts to be consumed by evil desires. The Lord declares that He will repay these individuals according to their actions, bringing consequences upon their own heads. This serves as a warning to those who choose to walk in disobedience and pursue sinful behaviors. The principle behind this verse is that individuals will ultimately face the results of their choices; those who persist in wickedness will bear the consequences of their actions. It highlights the importance of following God's commandments and living according to His will, rather than allowing sinful desires to lead one astray.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of the verse highlights the concept of God's justice and judgment towards those who persist in following their own sinful desires and engaging in detestable practices. The phrase "heart walketh after the heart" emphasizes the idea of one's inner desires and motivations driving their actions. This verse serves as a warning to those who choose to indulge in sinful behaviors, as they will face consequences for their actions. The word "recompense" underscores the theme of divine retribution, where individuals will ultimately face the consequences of their sinfulness. By stating that their way will be recompensed upon their own heads, the verse emphasizes personal accountability for one's actions. This verse can also be understood in the context of God's holiness and the importance of turning away from sinful practices in order to align oneself with His will. Overall, this passage serves as a reminder of the importance of following God's commands and turning away from detestable practices in order to avoid facing the consequences of one's actions.
