Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 13 - Verse 7

13:7
Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, The LORD saith it; albeit I have not spoken?

Meaning

In this verse, the speaker is questioning those who claim to have received a message from the Lord but in reality, have not. The verse suggests that there are individuals who have had only empty, self-generated visions and have spoken falsely, attributing their own words to the Lord. This serves as a caution against false prophets and misleading spiritual guidance. The verse warns against those who claim divine authority for their own personal or political agendas. It encourages believers to discern the true messages from God from deceptive interpretations. It reminds readers to be cautious of those who claim to speak on behalf of the Lord but are not truly conveying His messages. Ultimately, the verse emphasizes the importance of seeking truth and authenticity in spiritual matters, rather than being swayed by false prophecies and deceitful visions.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the prophet Ezekiel is condemning false prophets who claim to speak on behalf of the Lord but are actually spreading lies and deception. The term 'vain vision' refers to a vision that is empty and without substance, while 'lying divination' suggests that the prophets are using deceitful practices to mislead the people. The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the importance of discerning true messages from God from those that are fabricated by individuals seeking to deceive others. It serves as a warning against false prophets who claim divine authority but are in fact distorting the truth for their own gain. This verse reminds readers to be cautious and diligent in evaluating the messages they receive, ensuring that they align with the teachings of the true God. By exposing the deceptive practices of false prophets, Ezekiel emphasizes the need for integrity and authenticity in delivering messages purportedly from the Lord.
