20:47
And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.

Meaning

The verse "And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein" is a message from the Lord GOD to the forest of the south. In this verse, the Lord is warning of a coming judgment in the form of a destructive fire that will consume both green and dry trees. The unquenchable flame symbolizes the severity and inevitability of the punishment that will be brought upon the people. This passage serves as a vivid illustration of the consequences of disobedience and the wrath of God. It serves as a reminder to always heed the word of the Lord and to turn away from sin, lest one face the fiery judgment described in the verse.

Theological Overview

Interpreting the passage from Ezekiel 20:47, one may notice the vivid imagery of a forest in the south being consumed by a fierce fire, a symbol often used throughout the Bible to represent God's judgment. The setting of a forest, with both green and dry trees, signifies that no living thing will be spared from the consuming flames. This passage serves as a stark warning to the people, emphasizing the all-encompassing nature of God's judgment. The mention of faces being burned from the south to the north suggests that no one will escape the consequences of their actions. The unquenchable nature of the fire points to the severity and permanence of God's judgment. Thus, this verse demonstrates the importance of heeding the word of the Lord and seeking repentance before it is too late.
