Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 22 - Verse 26

22:26
Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

Meaning

This verse from Ezekiel 22:26 reflects the disappointment of God towards the priests of Israel for their disregard of His laws and desecration of sacred things. The priests, who were meant to uphold God's commandments and distinguish between the holy and the profane, have failed in their duties. By not making a clear distinction between the clean and unclean, they have shown a lack of reverence for God's standards. Additionally, their neglect of observing the sabbaths has further angered God, as it shows a lack of respect for His appointed times of rest and worship. Ultimately, their actions have led to God being dishonored among them. This verse serves as a reminder for us to uphold God's laws with reverence and to always distinguish between what is holy and what is not, in order to honor Him in all that we do.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see a strong rebuke from God towards the priests for their failure to uphold His law and treat His holy things with reverence. The priests are accused of not distinguishing between what is holy and what is profane, and failing to differentiate between what is clean and what is unclean. This lack of discernment and adherence to God's commandments has led them to disregard the sanctity of the Sabbath. As a result, God declares that He is profaned among them. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding God's laws and treating His holy things with the respect they deserve. It also emphasizes the responsibility that those in leadership positions in the church have to set an example of righteousness and obedience to God's commands. Through this rebuke, we are reminded of the need to honor God in all aspects of our lives and to approach His presence with reverence and awe.
