23:35
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.

Meaning

The verse from Ezekiel 23:35 reveals the Lord GOD's displeasure with the Israelites for forgetting Him and engaging in lewdness and whoredoms. The Lord GOD is expressing His disappointment at being pushed aside and ignored by His people, who have instead turned to sinful and immoral behavior. By casting Him behind their backs, they have chosen to prioritize their own desires and pleasures over their relationship with God. As a result, the Lord GOD declares that they will bear the consequences of their actions, facing the repercussions of their unfaithfulness and disobedience. This verse serves as a warning to all believers about the importance of staying true to their faith and not neglecting their relationship with God, as turning away from Him can lead to devastation and punishment. It highlights the significance of remaining devoted to God and living according to His will, in order to avoid the negative consequences of straying from His path.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological implications of Ezekiel 23:35, it is crucial to understand the context in which the verse is situated. The prophet Ezekiel is delivering a message from the Lord GOD to the people of Israel, condemning them for their unfaithfulness and idolatry. In this particular verse, God is expressing his disappointment with Israel for forgetting him and turning to sinful practices, such as lewdness and whoredoms. The use of the word "lewdness" carries a strong connotation of immorality and debauchery, emphasizing the severity of Israel's transgressions against God.

Furthermore, the imagery of casting God behind one's back is symbolic of willfully neglecting or disregarding his presence and commandments. By doing so, Israel has brought judgment upon themselves, as indicated by the phrase "bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms." This serves as a stark warning of the consequences of turning away from God and engaging in sinful behavior.

Overall, Ezekiel 23:35 serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of remaining faithful to God and following his commandments. It highlights the destructive nature of sin and the necessity of repentance and redemption in order to restore a relationship with God.
