Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 23 - Verse 43

23:43
Then said I unto her that was old in adulteries, Will they now commit whoredoms with her, and she with them?

Meaning

In this verse, the speaker is addressing a woman who has a history of engaging in adulterous behavior. The speaker questions whether the woman will continue to commit acts of immorality, and whether those who have previously engaged in such behavior with her will continue to do so. The verse serves as a cautionary tale, warning against the consequences of engaging in sinful behavior and the potential for a cycle of immorality to perpetuate itself. It highlights the destructive nature of adultery and promiscuity, and the harm it can cause not only to oneself but to others involved as well. By questioning the woman's future actions and the behavior of those around her, the speaker emphasizes the importance of repentance and turning away from sinful behavior in order to avoid further harm and consequences.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Ezekiel 23:43, the prophet Ezekiel is delivering a message from God to the people of Israel, using symbolism to describe their unfaithfulness to Him. The phrase "old in adulteries" refers to the long history of idolatry and unfaithfulness that the people of Israel had towards God, comparing it to the acts of a promiscuous woman. The use of the term "whoredoms" and "committing whoredoms" emphasizes the severity of their sin in turning away from God and committing spiritual adultery by worshipping false gods.

Through theological interpretation, we can see that this verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of straying from God and seeking satisfaction in other things. The imagery of adultery and whoredoms conveys the betrayal and unfaithfulness felt by God towards His people when they turn to idols and false gods. It highlights the seriousness of spiritual unfaithfulness and the need for repentance and returning to God. This verse prompts readers to reflect on their own relationship with God and to ensure that they remain faithful and devoted to Him alone.
