Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 33 - Verse 31

33:31
And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.

Meaning

This verse from Ezekiel 33:31 reflects a warning from God about the hypocrisy of his people. The passage describes how the people would come to listen to the prophet Ezekiel, appearing to be attentive and sincere. However, despite their outward show of love and respect, their actions did not align with their words. They would listen to the teachings of God but would not follow through with putting them into practice. Instead, their hearts were focused on their own selfish desires and material possessions, rather than on following God's commandments. The verse serves as a reminder that true obedience to God requires more than just empty words or outward displays of devotion; it requires genuine and wholehearted commitment to living according to his will. In a world filled with distractions and temptations, this passage challenges readers to reflect on their own intentions and motivations, urging them to align their actions with their professed faith.
