Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 44 - Verse 17

44:17
And it shall come to pass, that when they enter in at the gates of the inner court, they shall be clothed with linen garments; and no wool shall come upon them, whiles they minister in the gates of the inner court, and within.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Ezekiel in the Bible describes a specific instruction for the priests who are ministering in the inner court of the temple. It dictates that when they enter the gates of the inner court, they must be clothed in linen garments and not wear any wool while they minister in this sacred space. The significance of this command is rooted in the symbolism and rituals of the priestly duties. Linen was considered a pure and holy fabric, symbolizing righteousness and purity. On the other hand, wool was believed to retain impurities and symbolized sin. Therefore, by wearing linen garments and abstaining from wool, the priests were symbolically representing their dedication to holiness and purity as they served in the inner court of the temple, which was considered the most sacred area. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of purity and righteousness in the service of God.
