Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 46 - Verse 5

46:5
And the meat offering shall be an ephah for a ram, and the meat offering for the lambs as he shall be able to give, and an hin of oil to an ephah.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Numbers, the significance of the meat offering being an ephah for a ram, and the proportionate offering for the lambs, along with hin of oil to an ephah, lies in the value of giving generously and proportionately to honor and worship God. The ephah, an ancient Hebrew unit of measurement, symbolizes a consistent and substantial offering, emphasizing the importance of giving our best to God. The hin of oil, on the other hand, symbolizes purity and consecration, highlighting the need for offerings to be accompanied by a spirit of authenticity and dedication.

Furthermore, this verse underscores the principle of stewardship and responsibility in the act of giving to the Lord. By specifying the required amounts for different offerings, the verse encourages individuals to be mindful of what they are offering and to give according to their ability, in a manner that reflects their gratitude and reverence towards God. It serves as a reminder that our offerings should not be given haphazardly or half-heartedly, but rather with intentionality and reverence.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of the verse focuses on the concept of offering sacrifices as a form of worship and reverence to God. The meat offering mentioned here represents a symbolic act of giving back to God a portion of what He has provided, acknowledging His sovereignty and provision. The specific measurements mentioned, such as an ephah for a ram and an hin of oil to an ephah, point to the importance of giving generously and proportionately in honoring God. It also highlights the significance of the heart behind the offering, as it should be given willingly and in accordance with what one is able to give. This verse emphasizes the idea of sacrificial giving as an act of devotion and gratitude towards God, serving as a tangible expression of the relationship between humanity and the divine.
