Theological Overview

In this verse, we see a gathering of individuals who are described as "every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel". This phrase signifies those who have a deep reverence and fear of God's commands and teachings. The mention of those who "trembled" highlights the seriousness and awe with which they approached the Word of God. This group of people was concerned about the transgressions committed by others. The prophet who is speaking in this verse, presumably Ezra, expresses his astonishment at the situation until the evening sacrifice. The evening sacrifice was a regular practice in Jewish tradition, symbolizing the atonement for sins. The prophet's astonishment could stem from the gravity of the transgressions that had been committed, leading to a sense of shock and disbelief. This verse underscores the importance of reverence for God's teachings and the impact that transgressions can have on a community.
