Book of Genesis - Chapter 12 - Verse 19

12:19
Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Genesis, Abraham is questioned by Abimelech, the king of Gerar, about why he lied and said that his wife Sarah was his sister. Abraham's response reveals his fear for his own life, as he believed that the people of Gerar would kill him in order to take Sarah as their own because of her beauty. By saying Sarah was his sister, Abraham hoped to protect himself. However, Abimelech uncovers the truth and reprimands Abraham for his deception, questioning why he put Sarah in danger by not revealing their true relationship. Abimelech then instructs Abraham to take his wife and leave. This story serves as a reminder of the consequences of deceit and the importance of honesty in all interactions.
