Book of Genesis - Chapter 13 - Verse 7

13:7
And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

Meaning

This verse from Genesis 13:7 describes a conflict that arose between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot over grazing rights for their livestock. The presence of the Canaanites and Perizzites in the land added to the tension, as they were the indigenous people occupying the area at the time. The dispute between the herdsmen reflects the growing prosperity of both Abram and Lot, leading to competition for resources such as grazing land and water sources. This conflict ultimately led to Abram and Lot parting ways, with Abram generously giving Lot the first choice of land to settle in. This event foreshadows the eventual separation of the two men, as their wealth and influence continued to grow, ultimately resulting in them choosing different paths in life. The verse serves as a reminder of the challenges that can arise from material prosperity and the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully.

Theological Overview

In Genesis 13:7, we see a conflict arise between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. The word "strife" in this context refers to a quarrel or dispute that arose between the two groups due to their cattle herds competing for resources in the land. This seemingly mundane conflict between herdsmen actually has significant theological implications. The presence of discord among Abram and Lot's people foreshadows the future strife and division that will occur between their descendants, the Israelites and the Moabites and Ammonites. Additionally, the mention of the Canaanites and the Perizzites living in the land during this conflict serves as a reminder of the presence of other nations in the Promised Land, highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and unity amongst God's people. This verse underscores the importance of harmony and cooperation within the community of believers, as discord can lead to division and weaken their witness to the surrounding nations.
