Meaning

Within this verse from Genesis, we witness a significant strategic move made by Abraham as he faced a conflict with opposing forces. The phrase "divided himself against them" indicates Abraham's decision to split his forces in order to launch a surprise attack during the night. By utilizing this tactic, Abraham was able to gain the upper hand over his adversaries and emerge victorious in battle. The pursuit of his enemies to Hobah, on the left side of Damascus, showcases Abraham's determination to not only defeat his foes but also to ensure their complete removal from the region. This verse exemplifies the importance of strategy and decisiveness in times of conflict, as well as the perseverance required to see a battle through to its conclusion.
