Book of Genesis - Chapter 17 - Verse 15

17:15
And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

Meaning

During this moment in the book of Genesis, God is speaking to Abraham and informing him of an important change in his wife's name. The transition from Sarai to Sarah signifies a shift in identity and purpose. Sarai was the original name given to Abraham's wife, but under God's direction, her name is changed to Sarah. This change represents a new chapter in Sarah's life and a transformation of her role within the divine plan. In Hebrew culture, names hold significant meaning, often reflecting an individual's character or destiny. Therefore, the renaming of Sarai to Sarah symbolizes her new status as the mother of many nations, as God promises to bless her and give her a son in her old age. This change not only highlights Sarah's importance in God's plan but also signifies a renewed covenant between God and Abraham's family.
