Book of Genesis - Chapter 18 - Verse 12

18:12
Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Genesis, Sarah's reaction to the news of her impending motherhood is one of doubt and disbelief. When she overhears the angels telling Abraham that she will bear him a child in her old age, Sarah laughs to herself at the seemingly impossible prospect. She questions how it could be possible for her to experience pleasure and joy in her old age, especially when her husband, Abraham, is also advanced in years. This moment of skepticism and amusement highlights Sarah's human frailty and her struggle to fully trust in God's promises. Despite her initial reaction, Sarah ultimately does conceive and give birth to a son, Isaac, fulfilling God's plan and demonstrating his faithfulness to his chosen people.

Theological Overview

One interesting aspect of this verse is the theological interpretation of Sarah laughing at the idea of having pleasure in old age. Some scholars view Sarah's laughter as a sign of disbelief in God's promise to give her a child in her old age. They see her laughter as a lack of faith in God's ability to fulfill His promises. On the other hand, others interpret Sarah's laughter differently, seeing it as a moment of joy and amazement at God's miraculous plan. They argue that Sarah's laughter is not a sign of disbelief but rather a natural human reaction to the seemingly impossible situation she found herself in.

Furthermore, a word study on the term "pleasure" used in this verse can provide deeper insights into the meaning of Sarah's statement. The Hebrew word used for "pleasure" in this context is related to the idea of delight, enjoyment, or satisfaction. By understanding the nuances of this word, we can appreciate the complexity of Sarah's emotions as she grappled with the unexpected prospect of experiencing joy and fulfillment despite her advanced age. This word study sheds light on the depth of Sarah's response and adds layers of meaning to her laughter in the face of God's promise.
