Book of Genesis - Chapter 21 - Verse 10

21:10
Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Genesis, Sarah is speaking to her husband Abraham about Hagar and Ishmael. Sarah instructs Abraham to cast out Hagar and her son Ishmael because she does not want Ishmael to inherit alongside her own son, Isaac. This decision is based on the belief that Isaac, who was the child of promise, should be the sole heir to Abraham's inheritance. By asking Abraham to remove Hagar and Ishmael from their household, Sarah is prioritizing the well-being and position of her own son over that of his half-brother. This verse highlights the complexities of family dynamics and inheritance in the ancient world, where lineage and inheritance were of utmost importance. It also showcases the power dynamics within Abraham's household, as Sarah asserts her authority in determining the future of their family. Ultimately, this verse reveals the tension and conflict that can arise in polygamous relationships and the consequences of favoring one child over another.
