Book of Genesis - Chapter 31 - Verse 47

31:47
And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.

Meaning

After the confrontation between Laban and Jacob, where they made a covenant of peace, they set up a pillar as a witness to the agreement. Laban gave the pillar the Aramaic name Jegarsahadutha, which means "witness heap" in English. However, Jacob called it Galeed, which means "witness heap" in Hebrew. This act symbolized the two different cultures and languages coming together in unity. It also emphasized the importance of the agreement and the significance of the pillar as a witness to the promise made between Laban and Jacob. The naming of the pillar by both Laban and Jacob highlights the shared understanding and respect between the two men despite their differences. This verse serves as a reminder of the power of reconciliation and the importance of honoring agreements made in peace.
