Book of Genesis - Chapter 34 - Verse 5

34:5
And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

Meaning

In this verse, we see Jacob's reaction to the news that his daughter Dinah had been defiled. Despite his anger and grief, Jacob chose to remain silent until his sons returned from the field. This moment of silence shows Jacob's restraint and self-control in a difficult situation. His decision to wait for his sons before taking any action indicates a desire for a unified family response to the wrongdoing that has occurred. Jacob's silence also allows for a period of reflection, giving him time to consider the best course of action moving forward. This verse highlights Jacob's role as the patriarch of his family, responsible for leading and guiding his children in a time of crisis. By holding his peace, Jacob demonstrates the importance of thoughtful contemplation and collective decision-making in times of trouble.
